Apocalyptic Power Metal from Germany gives an epic look at “The End Of Time”.
It’s a popular subject now, the end of the world and time as we know it. Heavy Metal has always tackled this subject matter but after the pandemic and now the Russia/Ukraine War, it’s more in the forefront of people’s minds again.
WASTELAND CLAN aren’t acting like it’s quite the end times as they seemed poised to make a run to major stardom. Lilith Fox is the main singer, but she is often accompanied by growling Death vocals. It’s not overpowering though, as Fox is still the focal point. They use the vocals as accents, and considering the overall subject matter of doom it’s an appropriate addition.
They weave in and out of softer moments during the album, then pound you over the head with Metal. It’s actually quite an emotional trip and does make you think about the future of the planet and where we are headed.
The album has some great stand alone songs, but it plays like a long story and a conceptual album. The band has also gone all out with the costumes and their apocalyptic look. Not sure if you can put a long career together with a niche like this, but perhaps they have planned ahead and will adjust as necessary. On the other hand, when you read the news we seem to only getting closer to an apocalypse so their looks might be appropriate for quite some time, maybe until the end of it.
I’m giving this one an 8 out of 10 “Flaming Fists” because of the effort they put into making this band look and feel like the songs. They do some solid story-telling and quality of the music is exceptional from a production standpoint. It’s an interesting album with a wide range of songs from all out Metal assaults to softer moments with piano. If you like your Metal on the “epic” side, WASTELAND CLAN is the real deal.
