DYMYTRY Hails from the Czech Republic, their first album came out in around 2010 and their fanbase has been growing stronger ever since. In some ways they have followed a trajectory of the American band FIVE FINGER DEATHPUNCH. They have some similarities with them musically, but with more of a European and traditional Metal twist.
They are labeled as “Psy-Core”, which has Nu Metal influences blended with Modern Rock and even Power Metal. DYMYTRY has a sound that crosses a lot of genres which probably explains the success they’re having.
They have great stage presence as they where uniforms and masks that really add to their mystery and give them an added dimension other bands just don’t have. They do a great job branding themselves, even if it’s not completely original they embrace it and do it well.
“Five Angry Men” continues their quest for world domination with songs that could easily be heard on Active Rock stations in the United States. Their implementation of rap and anthemic choruses are perfect for today’s arena rock world.
There’s a surprising amount of slower material on the album, especially when you consider the title “Five Angry Men”. The first two singles “Enemy List” and “Everything Is Black” lean into the album title to some degree, but they’re still and leaning to a more commercial sound.
Perhaps the plan is to please the mainstream, hopefully they don’t loose some of their heavier fans in the process. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a heavy album, but it relies more on the epic and slowly building songs versus an all-out Metal assault. It’s most likely a good business move as you’re going to get a wider base getting into the music, and if you lose some hardcore fans along the way, it might be worth the risk.
I’m always torn between being commercially smart and sticking to your guns. It’s a choice most bands have to make at some point. For DYMYTRY, I really hope it works out, they ARE bringing heavy music to the masses. Bands like FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH have their share of haters, but they also sell out a lot of shows in the process. I think DYMYTRY is on that same path.
