TESTAMENT were one of the major Thrashers in the late 80s and early 90s. They were just outside the Big 4 of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.
Yes, there was still some distance between them and the top group, but they had a strong following despite grunge and alternative taking over the airwaves.
1992’s “The Ritual” was more “assessible” than they previous work, opting for more melody and grooves versus the all-out thrash assault. Metallica had just put out the “Black” album so it was more acceptable for the Thrash bands to expand on their sound. It was their highest charting album reaching number 55 on the Billboard charts.
“Electric Crown” was perhaps a little ahead of it’s time in some ways. Yes, it was a fairly traditional Metal song, but it was still considered too heavy for many radio stations.
Unfortunately the band started to break apart to some degree after this album, Alex Skolnick would leave and not come back until 2005.
