The German Metal band VELVET VIPER, lead by the dynamic Jutta Weinhold just might have the most “interesting” Metal album I’ve heard in a long time.
For those not familiar with the band, I had to do my own research as well. They started in the late 80’s and early 90’s after the band Zed Yago broke up. They only put out a couple albums before stepping away and coming back in 2017 where they’ve been on a terror putting out new albums.
They certainly playing a form of old-school Classic Metal, but it also has something different than anything I’ve heard before. Perhaps musically they are like Savatage with Prog tendencies. Jutta Weinhold’s voice is mesmerizing. Doro Pesch might get all the attention, but Weinhold actually sounds more natural at this. She’s almost like a female Ronnie James Dio, not in vocal tones, but just the way she owns every song.
“Nothing Compare To Metal” is an epic album and journey. The title track doesn’t do the album justice, it’s a decent Metal anthem, but I think the album really kicks in at song 5 with “Speak Truth To Power” and for the next 5 songs is some of the best (and interesting) Metal I’ve heard in a while.
“Sorcerer’s Apprentice” starts off like many Metal songs do, but suddenly it jumps right out of the speakers at you. It’s almost more like a Candlemass song with it’s Gothic and Doom overtones.
“The 4th Part” is simply a masterpiece. It runs over 7 and a half minutes, but it goes by fast thanks to some great hooks and the story-telling from Weinhold. The composing on this track is exceptional.
Other standout tracks were “Heroic Hearts”, “Invisible Danger”, “New World Child” and “Rise From The Fallen”. The album is really a masterpiece, but it’s kind of hiding behind a pretty basic album cover and a single that’s good, but doesn’t really tell the whole story until you get deeper into the album.
