Hard Rock does not have to be complicated to work, AC/DC, KISS, The Ramones, the list goes on and on with bands that actually use the K.I.S.S. theory, “Keep It Simple Stupid”. This band called “BLITZ” from the UK totally get it. They’re not reinventing the wheel, but they are reinforcing it to some degree.
They play strait up Hard Rock with a bit of a modern edge, but they mostly write strong hooks, very tasty guitar chops and keep the beat and bass moving forward and in the pocket. Sure that might sound easy, but it’s amazing how many bands fail in one of more category, mostly in the ability to write memorable hooks. BLITZ nails that down from the first track “Break Neck” to the last cut, the title track to “Kicking Up A Storm”. And if they “hook” isn’t right there in a song, they manage to pull you in with an infectious groove.
I’m not saying these guys lack diversity, in fact they show a pretty wide variety of influences. There’s some piano, an occasional “raggae” style and their sound spans decades of Classic Rock as they bring in into modern times. And just when you think you have them figure out they throw a curve ball like the very sweet “I’ll Find You In Yesterday”. They do what a band is supposed to do, keep you interested, keep you listening and keep you rockin’.
For a complete “album” experience, you need to get ahold of the Blitz album “Kicking Up A Storm”, you’re going to be pleasantly surprised and you’re going to have your faith in Rock N’ Roll revived, at least for a little while.
