If there was a perfect example of “Biker Rock” SPEEDFREAK might be it. Groove-laden, down and dirty, sleazy heavy, heavy rock from Chicago.
About half way into the first song and title track ‘Fast Lane Livin’”, my first thoughts actually went back to the sleazy punk-influenced sound of the 80’s. The production is more modern and their sound is more stripped down, but the attitude is the same.
After continuing on I realized they were quite a bit heavier and aggressive than the first track indicated. They tear through songs like “Doomsday Devices”, “White Knuckle Fever” and “Full Throttle” like a wolf going through a hen house. They have a Southern swagger mixed with a Metalized Punk sound. I guess at the end of the day it’s Rock N’ Roll.
Personally, I really dig this album. The vocals are just pure nasty and the band’s rocking so hard I’m burning calories just sitting here listening. I can only the image the live show is insane, I’d throw a beer bottle right now if I had one!
For an independent release, the production is very solid, much better than expected, it really fits the rawness of the band. I’m guessing the live version isn’t much different that what’s recorded.
“Fast Lane Livin’” contains 8 songs total, all running between 3 to 4 minutes, so they get right to the point. You could say it’s like an album from the late 70’s when they put out shorter releases more often or it’s an extended EP. Either way it does NOT contain any filler, they start kicking your ass from the first not and don’t let up until the last.
I’m giving this one a pretty high rating considering it’s a shorter release. I have to give this an 8 out of 10 “Flaming Fists”. For an independent release it’s done exceptionally well. They band is very tight, the songs are catchy and they maintain a consistency throughout the album. If you like Motorhead, Peter Pan Speedrock, Hellyeah, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Rose Tattoo and anything in between, you’ll have this one cranked up.
