The legendary Metal band FLOTSAM & JETSAM are simply one of the Top bands going right now in a category they have evolved into, Power Metal. Yes, they still have their traditional Thrash and Speed Metal elements, but “I Am The Weapon” is really more of a strait up Power Metal masterpiece.
It’s hard to believe their first album was in 1986, their influences run deep into the Trash and Metal communities around the world. They might not be a household name, but any Metalhead certainly knows their name. They have evolved and changed over the years but they’ve always stayed true to their Metal roots.
From top to bottom this album is strong. One could argue the last three tracks, “Kings Of The Underworld”, “Running Through The Fire” and “Black Wings” are as strong as the first three tracks (that are also singles) “A New Kind Of Hero”, “Primal” and the title track “I Am The Weapon”. To be honest, the album never does let up, “The Head Of The Snake” could be the best track on the album, and I’m sure fans will debate their favorites.
It’s strange to say that the drummer may have a strong influence on the Melodic sound of the band, but when that drummer is Ken Mary, you have to take that into consideration. He’s work with Impellitteri, House Of Lords, Fifth Angel and many others over the years. Eric Knutson has to be given a huge amount of credit too, he sounds as good as ever, not an easy task for a Metal singer to sill have the chops after decades of playing and performing.
The chemistry as a whole is superb, they’re a well-oiled Metal machine. They helped create the European Metal scene and they are showing us why they are so important decades later.
